Hello again!

File 03-04-2016

We’re back!  After a longer-than-planned break, we’re back to it and have lots of exciting news to share.  We’re taking over @Chelt52 over on Twitter from tomorrow for a week to help us celebrate our first birthday!

Yep, we’ve been a company for a whole year and we couldn’t be happier.  Over at @Chelt52  we’ll be sharing insights into life as a small business, how we’ve turned our passion into a business and of course lots of knitting-related tweets!

Also in celebration of our first birthday, we’re giving away a place on our course that starts this Thursday at Whole Foods Market in Cheltenham – to enter, pop over to see us on Facebook, where all the details are.  The competition closes on 5th April, and our lucky winner will be notified then.  Tickets are still available, so if you’ve been thinking about learning to knit with us we hope to see you there!

Bye for now,

p.s. The story behind the photo will be revealed this week…

Meet our designer!

Our beautiful logo was designed by Jess Waterman, Theatre Manager at the Bacon Theatre, Cheltenham. Jess designs print for the theatre, including the seasonal brochure and overseeing the website design. She has an amazingly creative brain, and a brilliant ability to take a few random ideas from a customer and turn them into a work of art. Jess had designed logos for Nonumbum Theatre Company and Hannah’s Homemade before we approached her to create our Cable Girls branding. We love the way Jess has incorporated a three-stranded cable to represent the three of us, and how the stitches resemble little birds!

We had a little chat with Jess about her passion for design:

TCG: How did you get into design work?

Jess: Entirely by accident! In the course of my marketing work at the Bacon Theatre, my appetite for certain projects like creating posters and putting together ‘artwork’ for press adverts increased and so did my frustration with Publisher. A colleaguerecognised my secret passion and persuaded me to train to use professional graphic design software (Adobe InDesign). Needless to say, I went ahead gleefully and I remain grateful for the encouragement.

TCG: What do you enjoy most about the design process?

Jess: Ooh tricky question. I love pulling together a collection of seemingly unrelated ideas to create something new. For me, understanding a project’s purpose and ‘audience’ is just as interesting as how aesthetically pleasing it might be. Designing a logo is brilliant fun because it’s all about crafting a kind of ‘persona’ that reflects the people, ideas and products it represents. Every project is unique for that reason.

TCG: What is your favourite part about your theatre role?

Jess: As with design; creativity and practicality go hand in hand when running a theatre venue – having ideas and then finding ways to realise them! I love theatre experiences and love the fact that we get to share these with audiences every week at The Bacon. But above all else, I am extremely lucky to work with a fantastic bunch of people.

TCG: What are your plans for the future?

Jess: No concrete plans. I just hope to be involved in many more projects that spark my creativity!

TCG: Thanks Jess – we’re really excited to be working with you!

For any enquiries, Jess can be contacted on team@bacontheatre.co.uk.

Catching up, starting out and a whole lot of knitting

It seems it’s easy to forget to blog when you’re having fun, but grab a cuppa and your knitting and settle in- it’s catch up time!

We are now two weeks into our first learn to knit course and it’s going really well.  Our learners are cracking on with the essentials and we’re having a great time sharing our passion for knitting.  If you are interested in learning to knit with us but couldn’t make the first course don’t worry- more are planned!  Our next six-week course starts on 11th June and is aimed at beginners and those who haven’t knitted in a long time but want to give it another go.  The booking page is here, and if Thursday evenings don’t work for you stay tuned, because we will be adding alternative days very soon.  Don’t forget, places on our beginners courses are 25% off if booked before 31st May 2015.

Lots of work has been done behind the scenes at The Cable Girls over the last couple of weeks on essentials like our business plan and making sure our plans for financial record keeping are sufficient for when tax time rolls around.  We have found a few good resources and plan to blog about the things we’ve learned along the way, but if you have any questions about life as a new creative startup or tips on setting up a business let us know in the comments below.

Since we launched #projectwarmthcheltenham we have received 40 squares already, more than half a blanket! Thank you to all our knitters so far, if you want to join in the details are here on what we are asking for and where to send your squares.  We are also discussing our plans for future social projects, so if you have any ideas or want to work with us on a knitting project to benefit the community please leave us a comment or get in touch.

The Art Maze, Project Warmth: Cheltenham and online course bookings

Hi everyone,

Grab a cuppa and your knitting (unless you don’t yet knit, in which case stay tuned…) and brace yourselves for our latest roundup of the feverish activity at The Cable Girls HQ.

We are thrilled to announce we have been invited to contribute to the new Art Maze in Cheltenham – our work will be unveiled on 1st April and open until 19th April.  The Art Maze is being organised by Art Playground, the wonderful venue where we hold our knitting classes and workshops.

The Art Maze will be in an empty shop unit on the ground floor of the Beechwood Arcade in the centre of Cheltenham.  It’s free to enter and you can also come and meet us and try your hand at knitting:

The Cable Girls knit-a-long sessions at the Art Maze, 11am-1pm:

Friday 3rd April
Saturday 4th April
Tuesday 7th April
Thursday 9th April
Saturday 11th April

We will be asking (and helping!) people to knit a few stitches or rows on a square, which we will turn into blankets for donation to homeless people in the local area – launching our first community project, “Project Warmth: Cheltenham” (#ProjectWarmthCheltenham).  If you are already a knitter or crocheter and want to contribute some squares, please use acrylic yarn so the finished blanket is easy to wash.  You can do them in any colour, weight of yarn, needle size and stitch you choose, just please make them 6 inches/15cm square.  You can bring them to the Art Maze or send them to us at:

In other news, the last bits and pieces we need for our first classes were ordered this week and we received our lovely business cards – very exciting stuff.

We also opened up our courses to online bookings – all the details and links to book are on our website, which was overhauled this week too!  Don’t forget – our learn to knit workshops are only £60 for 6 weeks if booked before 31st May 2015.

Progress

Hi!

Things are progressing at speed here at The Cable Girls HQ – we’re working on setting up the venue for the first round of workshops and will be announcing the dates soon.

We’re also working to set up our first weekend knitting retreat for existing knitters.  It will be held somewhere near Cheltenham and will be set in a beautiful countryside location. We’ll have sessions to learn new skills, plus group knitting time and breaks in the schedule to allow us to enjoy the surrounding areas or just hunker down and knit!  Details will be announced soon, but if you’re excited and want to know more please get in touch using the contact form on our ‘About’ page.

We offer bespoke packages too – so if you want to arrange a learn to knit session for a hen do or baby shower please contact us using the form on the right hand side of this page.  We are willing to travel and can tailor patterns to skill levels and different events – so get in touch and challenge us!
