A few of our favourite things: 8th November 2015

Hello!

Welcome to this week’s edition of our favourite things from the very rainy Cotswolds.  Grab a cuppa and let’s catch up!

With #Socktober now a dim and distant memory, we’re moving on to other knits and challenges.  Kate is still mad about sock knitting (and buying more sock yarn – oops.) and is knitting away on her Still Light.  Hannah, meanwhile, is celebrating #Throwvember, knitting her first throw (Squared Shades from Red Heart) and Sheila is partaking in NaKniSweMo – National Knit a Sweater Month – where participants aim to complete a whole sweater in a month, preferably with more than 50,000 stitches.  So, you know, just another quiet month at Cable Girls HQ!

The blankets for #ProjectWarmthCheltenham are going well – thank you again to all of the wonderful knitters that helped us with the creation of these woolly charity masterpieces!  As soon as they are completed, pictures will be posted 🙂

Meanwhile, over on Twitter…

A few of our favourite things: 1st November 2015

Hello!

Welcome to this week’s edition of our favourite things from misty and foggy Gloucestershire.  With the weather like this, we’ve enjoyed curling up with a cuppa and a lot of knitting.

So #Socktober has come to an end, and team Cable Girls managed twelve completed socks and two partial socks!  We’re very pleased – Sheila tried new heels on three pairs of socks, Hannah met her goal and Kate managed to finish one pair and a prototype of a new pattern, plus starting a new pair and getting to the leg of the second Kalajoki sock.  We also knitted a cardigan (Sheila) a hat and a sleeve (Kate) – because we couldn’t just knit socks with Christmas around the corner!

We’ve been organising our stashes, adding to them (ahem) and passing some on between us when needed for projects.  Festive knits are well underway – did you see our tweet with our first red Starbucks cup of the year earlier this week?

The main focus at Cable Girls HQ at the moment is finishing the blankets we are making as our work on #ProjectWarmthCheltenham comes to an end (for this year at least).  A huge thank you to all our wonderful knitters – we will make sure there are photos of the finished blankets and let you know where they are donated.  If you have any squares to send us, please make sure they reach us by 16th November for inclusion in the 2015 blankets.  Here’s the original post with all the details you need 🙂

We will announce our next charity knitting project in early 2016 – our goal is to always have a project to benefit the community underway, to give back to our local area and good causes.

In other news, we are just finalising the dates for our next learn to knit courses, with the first one starting in January 2016. Dates will be announced here very soon, but if you want to know before everyone else, you can sign up for our mailing list here 🙂

A few of our favourite things: 25th October 2015

Hello!

Welcome to this week’s edition of our favourite things…

We’ve all been knitting away furiously on our #Socktober goals as we edge towards the end of the month (on a related note – how is it November next weekend?!).  Our featured picture this week is Hannah’s finished pair of matching superb stripy socks – meaning she has achieved her #Socktober goals – you go girl!

Sheila is powering through several projects, always with a sock on the go though – she has tried the fish lips kiss heel and moved on to the eye of partridge heel for her next pair.

Kate has finished the prototype of the grippy yoga socks and finished the Simple Skyp socks she was working on.  She had forgotten when she set her #Socktober goals that her 3mm dpns were in use on the first sleeve of her Still Light tunic, so she had to do some serious sleeve knitting to get them freed up for the second Kalajoki.  Never not having a sock on the needles, however, she’s trying out some Sirdar Heart and Sole in another pair of Simple Skyp socks and loves the beautiful pastel stripes of the Hello Cheeky colour way.  She’s not sure whether the Kalajoki will be finished before the end of the month, but she’s going to give it a good go.

In other news, we’ve just finished our last learn to knit course at the fabulous Whole Foods in Cheltenham for 2015– if you’ve decided you want to join us on our next course stay tuned as dates will be announced here very soon for the first half of 2016.  If you want to know before everyone else, you can sign up for our mailing list here 🙂

A few of our favourite things: 4th October 2015

Hello!

We’re back after a bit of a hiatus – it’s been hectic at Cable Girls HQ in the last few weeks, so grab a cuppa, get comfy and settle in for a bumper edition of our favourite things from the last couple of weeks.

The main reason that we’ve been away from the blog is that Cable Girl Hannah got married!  We were all celebrating and helping set up the wedding (and one of us was learning to crochet for it – that took a while!), hence our absence here.  Congratulations Hannah, we wish you a lifetime of happiness and a yarn stash that never runs out 🙂

We’re now four weeks into our current learn to knit course at the fabulous Whole Foods in Cheltenham – if you’ve decided you want to join us on our next course stay tuned as dates will be announced here very soon.  If you want to know before everyone else, you can sign up for our mailing list here 🙂

Like a lot of the knitting world, The Cable Girls are excited to celebrate #SOCKTOBER!  We knit socks all year round, but in October we really pick up the pace.  More pairs, new techniques and a really good excuse to finish up those second socks that have been lingering slightly too long…

Sheila’s started off well with her #SOCKTOBER goal to try new ways of knitting heels – her first attempt at afterthought heels is above and she’s cracking on through her list – the fish lips kiss heel is next and we can’t wait to see her finished socks.

Kate’s goals are to finish the prototype of the pilates sock with grippy bits (if it works out you might just see the pattern here soon!), finish up a Simple Skyp sock that’s been lurking a while (second sock syndrome – in the picture above) and to cast on and finish the second of her Kalajoki socks (sensing a theme yet?).

Hannah’s aim is to finish her current sock, although we suspect that more than one pair will be done this month now that she’s back from her honeymoon!

Meanwhile, over on Twitter…

And from our blog reading…

  • We love the idea of “Knitting In” from Knit Luck – when things are getting stressful, knit it out – it’s what we do!
  • Tanis’ Veronika top is simple and beautiful
  • The purple yarn in this line break shawl by Nook is fabulous
  • Woolythyme’s Axis shawl is amazing – love the orange and grey together!

And this was our favourite Pin of the week, in honour of Sheila’s Socktober goal.

How have you been?  Are you celebrating Socktober?  Let us know in the comments…

A few of our favourite things: 6th September 2015

Hello!

We took a week off last week to enjoy some extra knitting time over the bank holiday weekend (or public holiday, if you’re not from the UK).  But we’re back with another round of our favourite things, so grab a cuppa and settle in!

Our favourite thing this week is how much fun we had teaching five lovely people how to knit socks.  They were awesome and so were the finished articles:

Our next learn to knit course starts this week – somehow it’s our third course!  We’re holding it at Whole Foods in Cheltenham – if you want to pop down and join us we’ll be there 6.45pm on Tuesday for the start of the course.  Tickets are still available here.

In terms of our knitting, it seems the change of season has spurred us all on to finish things over the last fortnight – or perhaps it’s the opportunity to cast on all the new things.  Either way, a small drop in temperature and the big projects are all out!  Alpaca, bulky yarn – we love summer, but it’s nice to get bigger projects underway once the first hint of autumn appears.

Sheila finished her amazing Tree of Life Afghan – we know she’s a seriously talented knitter, but she likes to raise the bar every now and again!

She has also knitted some fab tiny mittens as part of a display in our lovely friend Jemma’s shop The Crafty Hands Company in Chipping Campden – they are a wonderful idea for an advent calendar.  If you’re starting to think about knitting for the Christmas season (yep, it’s almost that time of year again) you can join us for Christmas knitting sessions in October or November.

Hannah has finished her second Schmeichler shawl in fabulous shades of turquoise and pink and while checking through her stash she fell in back in love with some 4-ply merino.  She’s giving in to the Hitofude fever that Sheila inadvertently started a few weeks ago… This is the problem when you work with fellow knitters – patterns can be contagious!

Kate has finished the knitting on her Low Tide cardigan and picked out the buttons, she just needs to get them sewn on and start blocking.  Kate’s on a mission to knit up some of her stash, so after finishing a Honeycomb Cable Cushion that had been lurking half-finished, she cast on for a Still Light tunic in the lovely (and very affordable!) Drops Alpaca in a very pretty pale grey that she bought longer ago than she cares to admit…

Meanwhile, over on Twitter…

And from our blog reading this week…

  • Andi’s blog about knitting in public was spot on!  We are prolific knitters in public – on planes, in waiting rooms and in pretty much every coffee shop we visit together.
  • We thought The Purl Bee’s Rectangular Colorblock Bias Blanket was beautiful.
  • And so is Julie’s Grey Mist cowl – the yarn is glorious and the dinosaur sheets are pretty amazing too!

And this was our favourite pin of the week!

How was your week?  Are you also experiencing the need to finish everything and cast on new projects for the new season?

A few of our favourite things: 23rd August 2015

Hello!

We’re still enjoying writing our favourite things blogs (the first one is here, with the glittery milkshake, and the second one is here, with the knitted owl…) so here is what we’ve been raving about this week…

Firstly, a big happy birthday to our very own Hannah – wishing you lots of yarn and no dropped stitches 🙂

It’s still all about the socks at Cable Girls HQ, with at least two new pairs being cast on this week, including Kate’s Kalajoki socks in a lovely blue shade of Sport from PT5, a yarn she picked up on holiday in Norway last year.

Sheila is knitting away on her Tree of Life Afghan at her usual breakneck speed – it will be done well before it gets cold again here in the Cotswolds!

This week at Cable Girls HQ we had a surprise present in the post – a vintage knitting book and set of patterns!  We’re starting to read through them (very carefully) and can’t wait to see what patterns are in store for us:

Meanwhile, over on Twitter…

  • We had a good chuckle at the things people posted with #thingsknittersdo – and we identified with quite a few too!
  • These labels for hand knits from Knit Picks are perfect!  Their gift tags are pretty funny too…
  • We were seriously impressed by Woola OOPS’ knitted car cover

And from our blog reading this week…

  • We loved reading Tin Can Knits’ post about how their patterns get made.  We’re working on a few patterns and it seemed quite a daunting process, but reading about their process made it seem a bit more accessible.
  • Andi’s explanation of why she keeps knitting was lovely – it really resonated with us.  We definitely agree that it’s relaxing and love that it’s productive too.
  • We were wowed by the yarn Bethany used for her Fluid hat – and her website design is fabulous too!

Our favourite pin this week was the map of “cuts of lamb” – very clever!

We can hardly believe that the summer is almost over – it’s our final knitting surgery this week in Cheltenham and our next learn to knit course starts in just 10 days’ time!  If you want to come along and share the wonderful world of knitting with us, you can book here – if you have any questions about it leave us a comment below.

A few of our favourite things: 17th August 2015

Hello!

We really enjoyed writing our favourite things post last week (the one with the glittery milkshake) so we thought we’d write another one!

Our favourite knit this week is Sheila’s Chouette hat – the owl is so cute!

Hannah has finished a Schmeichler shawl this week and has already cast on another one in pink and turquoise.

A few socks are nearer completion at Cable Girls HQ and Kate’s Low Tide cardie is almost done.

We’re starting to think about autumn knits and maybe even what we’ll be knitting for Christmas presents (sssh!).  What are you planning for your autumn/winter knits and stash this year?

Meanwhile, over on Twitter…

And from our favourite knitting blogs recently…

And our favourite pin this week was a list of emoticons for knitters – we’d use them all the time!  If you want to pop over and see our Pinterest boards they are here.

If you’d like to share some of your favourite knitting things, let us know in the comments.
